How to Solve a Water Hammer Problem

Water Hammer Repair 317-784-1870

Is your plumbing system noisy? After you shut off a faucet, do you experience a loud bang, a strong vibration, and a lingering hiss? This is called water hammer, and it is the most common noisy plumbing problem among homeowners. Fortunately, there are a few simple ways to solve a water hammer issue, and many of which are reasonably affordable. And some you can even do yourself! Continue reading to learn which options you have for repairing water hammer in your plumbing system.

What is Water Hammer?

Technically referred to as hydraulic shock, water hammer is one of the most common noisy plumbing issues; but noise is not the worst part about it. Water hammer is actually damaging to your plumbing system, and should be addressed in a timely manner to prevent costly plumbing repairs, appliance repairs, and pipe replacement. The sounds and reverberations experienced at the time water hammer occurs is a result of water traveling through your plumbing pipes at thousands of feet per second while exerting hundreds of pounds of pressure per inch. But what causes water hammer to begin with?

Causes

Water Hammer Repair 317-784-1870

Water Hammer Repair 317-784-1870

When water is traveling at high speeds and extreme pressure through your plumbing pipes, an abrupt halting of the water flow (shutting off the faucet or valve quickly) will cause the resulting noise and reverberations. The loud bang you hear is actually the pipes colliding with one another and against other framing components of the home. This is where the damage can happen. Homes are usually fitted with a plumbing piece called an air chamber to absorb the shock produced when water is traveling at high speeds under high pressure. Air chambers are generally fitted on the hot and cold water lines near the faucet or water intake valve. They are usually not visible, and sometimes hidden inside walls. Older homes may not have air chambers but should, and newer homes are usually equipped with them already.

Solutions

If your air chamber is filled with water, you can solve this problem by draining your plumbing pipes, thus restoring the air back into the chambers and recharging your plumbing system. For a long-term solution, you could have your trusted master plumber install an engineered or mechanical water hammer arrestor. These devices are charged with air or gas, and do not fail under pressure. The best solution for preventing water hammer problems is to have your plumbing installed properly, the first time. If you are concerned about the condition of your home’s plumbing, talk to your local Indianapolis plumber for inspection, diagnostic, and repair services.

How to Drain Your Plumbing System

Plumbing Drain Repair 317-784-1870

Plumbing Drain Repair 317-784-1870

You may never have to drain your home’s plumbing system, but sometimes, it is the best solution to a range of problems. The most common reasons to drain the plumbing is to fix a water hammer issue, lock up a seasonal property for winter, or to repair and replace plumbing lines.

If you are facing any of the above plumbing challenges, draining might help. If you are not comfortable taking on this task yourself, simply hire a licensed plumber for professional plumbing service.

However, if you are a regular handyman or women, you could get the job done so long as you have the right knowledge and supplied. Continue reading for a brief guide to draining your plumbing system.

Getting Started

First

You will need to locate and shut off the main water valve before the meter, on the supply side. If you are having trouble locating your main water valve, just look for your water meter. Then follow the supply lines into your home. If you are still having trouble, call your local plumber for quick, over-the-phone assistance. Once you turn off the main water supply, you can move on with the remaining steps.

Second

If your home has multiple levels, start at the highest level and open all of the sink faucets. Work your way down to the basement or bottom level.

Third

Once you are on the lowest floor in your home, open the laundry tub faucet and let all the water drain out from upstairs.

Fourth

Repeat the second step, except instead of opening all the sink faucets, open all the shower and bathtub faucets.

Fifth

Flush all the toilets in your house, starting on the top floor and working your way down.

Sixth

If you are leaving a home unattended for a long period of time, like an entire season, leave all faucets in the open position. This is common for vacation homes and seasonal properties.

Seventh

Do a final check-through on all floors to ensure that all faucets are open and not dripping water. It is okay for faucets on the first floor to have a slow residual drip. But other than that, there should be no water coming out of them.

Eighth

If you are leaving the home unattended for a long period of time, block all the toilet bowls and tub drains with wadded cloths or plastic wrap to prevent leaking sewer gasses.

Ninth

Close all faucets in the home, and turn the main water valve back on!

Tenth

If you are still experiencing a water hammer problem, or any other plumbing issues, contact a licensed plumber for professional assistance. Do not take any chances with your plumbing! Small issues can quickly turn into large, costly ones in a matter of hours!

How to Handle a Flooded Bathroom

A flooded bathroom is a disaster, but that doesn’t mean you can’t handle it. Whether you botched a DIY plumbing project or it comes as a surprise, all bathroom floods can be managed with the right knowledge and resources. Continue reading to learn how.

Bathroom Floods

Bathroom floods can happen for a whole list of reasons, but most often, it comes down to a burst pipe or clog. Sometimes the aftermath is simply a puddle that can be soaked up, but other times, the flood is much more than that. When you are faced with a major bathroom flood, it is important to follow some highly-recommended steps in order to get yourself out of trouble as quickly and safely as possible, while also working toward leaving behind as much water damage as possible. Here’s how:

Turn Off the Water Supply (and Perhaps Electricity Too)

As soon as you discover a flooded room (in this case, a bathroom), the first thing you need to do is turn OFF your main water supply to the home. This will put a temporary stop to all incoming water flow so you can control the flooding. This is why it is important to know exactly where all your water shut-off valves are located in your home, both inside and out. If the water is high, and is in close proximity to electrical outlets, it is important to turn your power off as well. Once the water supply is stopped and the repair is complete, you can turn your water and power back on. In fact, you can turn the power back on as soon as the water is drained.

Damage Control

After you have shut off your water, it is time to assess the damage and clean up. Use mops, towels, and cloths to absorb and remove as much water as possible. You may need to use a wet-dry vacuum for excessive amounts of water. Open up all cabinets and drawers to air them out and prevent mold growth, and rescue any salvageable belongings (i.e. furniture, clothing, décor, etc.). Place fans all over the room facing the flooded area to encourage faster drying. Allow the fans to operate for several days to ensure complete dryness. If there is too much water to clean up yourself, you will need emergency plumbing repair service. Contact an Indianapolis plumber for fast help with a bathroom flood. They have the equipment and resources to get the job done efficiently and effectively.

Organize

After you have cleaned up all the water, it is a good idea to take video or pictures for insurance purposes. In fact, it may be a good idea to take pictures before as well. Pull back a corner of carpeting to see if there is water damage to the floorboards, and if so, take pictures of this too. Also check to see if water is dripping from the ceilings underneath the flooded area. Take inventory of all the damages and damaged goods to use as a reference for your claim.

Contact a Plumber

Even if you had a small flood that you were able to clean up on your own, you will still need to hire a licensed plumber to investigate the cause behind the flood. They will need to repair the issues that lead to your flooding disaster, otherwise, it is very likely it will happen again. Once the underlying problem of a bathroom flood is repaired, you can rest assure that your plumbing woes are far behind you.

The 5 Rules to Avoiding Plumbing Disasters

Whether the sink, toilet, tub, or drain, when you take on a DIY home plumbing job, it can go from “manageable” to full-on “disaster” in a matter of minutes. Many homeowners will start a plumbing project, but quickly end up over their heads in tools, parts, blueprints, sludge, and water. So it is important to protect yourself from plumbing catastrophes like this with proper knowledge, practice, and assistance. Continue reading to learn the top five rules to avoiding do-it-yourself plumbing mishaps and regrets.

Avoid Direct Copper-to-Steel Connections

Indianapolis Plumbing Repair 317-784-1870

Indianapolis Plumbing Repair 317-784-1870

When replacing parts of your plumbing pipe, avoid connecting copper pipes and galvanized steel pipes directly. And a thin layer of thread sealant or Teflon tape won’t cut it either. Steel plumbing pipe can begin to corrode as soon as the connection to copper is made tight. Instead, use a fitting device called a dielectric union to connect copper plumbing pipes to galvanized steel plumbing pipes. It is essentially a metal collar that uses isolation brushings, one half steel and the other half copper. That way, each part is kept separate.

Know the Proper Plumbing Code for Big Projects

There are rules to home plumbing and construction, namely codes. These codes are very complex, with meticulous and detailed rules that dictate how, what, and where you can do plumbing work. For instance, you must know how far you can place certain fixtures from a drain waste vent-line according to its pipe diameter and other specifications. These details are important to know if you want to ensure the safety and integrity of your residence and all its utility systems. Purchase a copy of the Uniform Plumbing Code (UPC) and a book called Code Check before attempting any major DIY construction projects.

Know the Exact Location of Your Plumbing Pipes

Before taking a hammer or drill to your drywall, it is important to make sure you know what you are drilling or hammering into. A common mistake homeowners make is rupturing copper or plastic supply or drains inside walls. Purchase a stud sensor to check your walls before any sort of demolition. This device will detect both pipes and electrical wiring.

Always Perform a Water Leak Test Before Finishing Up

At the conclusion of your plumbing project, it is important to always check for water leaks before sealing everything back up. If installing new valve components, you’ll want to check that it opens and closes, and also run hot and cold water through it to see that it drains properly. In fact, you’ll want to check drains and faucets like this. You can purchase a leak detector detergent at a hardware or home improvement store to check for gas line leaks as well.

Never Over-Tighten Plumbing Connections and Components

Since you cannot always trust the fit or quality of all plumbing components, you may be tempted to over-tighten connections to ensure a good fit. But this is not only in-effective, it is detrimental to your plumbing components. A simple half-turn past the tension point is all you need to properly tighten and close up all your connections. Things like brass copper gas fittings are more susceptible to wrench damage than steel plumbing pipes, but in all cases, proper tension should be used.

My Basement is Flooded! What Do I Do?

Indianapolis Plumbers 317-784-1870

Indianapolis Plumbers 317-784-1870

A flooded basement is a dreaded home disaster that no one wants to face as a property owner. But the reality is that basements can and do flood, whether from defective plumbing or inclement weather. For this reason, it is wise as a home owner to learn what to do in case of a basement flood emergency. Continue reading to gain this knowledge, and be better prepared to manage a flooded basement if it were to ever happen to your home.

Act Fast

The most important thing you can do when you discover that your basement is flooding is to act fast. Take immediate action to reduce the ultimate amount of water damage as much as possible. By neglecting to reverse a water leak, you risk causing further damage to your home, and paying thousands of dollars in repairs and renovations. The sooner you effectuate a remedy, the better your chances are at recovering more efficiently in terms of money and time.

In the case that your basement floods, here’s what to do:

1. Shut Off the Water Supply. Find your main water shut off valve and immediately turn the water supply off to the home. If you know the exact source of the water flow, you can just turn off that water source, such as a water heater or water softener. It is best to first turn off the main water supply to be sure the overflow is stopped immediately. In the case of a sewage backup, refrain from using any appliances that use water, such as dishwashers and washing machines.

2. Do Not Walk Through the Water. Assess the damage from a distance first. This will protect you from electric shock and other potential, unforeseen hazards that can occur as a result from indoor floods. If you believe it is 100% safe, and choose to walk through the water, turn off the power supply to the entire home first. And be sure to wear protective gear, especially if the flood waters come from a sewer pipe.

3. Check for Gas Leaks and Structural Damage. While still at a distance, also look for possible gas leaks and damage. If you cannot tell, do not enter the water and move on to the next step.

4. Call a Licensed Plumber. They retain the proper tools, training, and knowledge to manage your basement flood and repair the source of the plumbing problem. Most plumbing companies that have been established for some time even offer 24 hour emergency service for indoor floods.

5. Contact Your Insurance Provider. Once you have a plumber on the way, immediately contact your home owners’ insurance company. Do not hesitate to make this call! Because the longer you wait, your chances of getting approved for coverage lessen. And be sure to take extensive photos of all the damage, and save all documents and receipts for repairs and related purchases.

6. Take Preventative Measures. Preventative maintenance is the best method for avoiding another basement flood or plumbing emergency. Ask your plumber what you can do to prevent future plumbing problems, and your options for in-home plumbing security.

Often times, water pumps are a part of the home that goes unnoticed. And until a problem occurs, they continue to remain in the back of our minds. But in order to function properly and efficiently, water pumps required routine maintenance just as much as the rest of your home’s plumbing appliances and systems.

If maintenance is neglected, you could face sudden breakdowns and costly repairs when you are least expecting it. Fortunately, water pump maintenance is simple and inexpensive.

Continue reading to learn some valuable water pump maintenance tips, and better protect your home’s plumbing from another disaster.

Water Pump System and Tank Maintenance

Preventative maintenance for your water pump system is important in order to enhance the quality and health of your home’s water, improve the function of your system, and reduce the cost of repairs and replacements. Knowing the on-going needs of your water system can greatly increase the reliability of your overall operation.

It is recommended to have your water pump system inspected and serviced at least once every two to three years. If you are putting a property up for sale on the market, it is best to have the water pump system audited before the inspection process. This will prevent any sudden surprises. At the time of your scheduled water pump service appointment, you will either need to receive routine maintenance, or a complete system replacement.

A professional master plumbing contractor will cover several areas during their inspection process, including the well, pump, tank, wellheads, pump platforms, chlorinators, and the overall function of the system. They will also test and inspect your tank’s water pressure, record water levels, measure pump times and cycle starts, check for leaks, and assess the condition of the pumps. Generally, it is custom to make small repairs and replacements in order to prevent or avoid future plumbing issues and costlier repairs.

A major component to outdoor maintenance is plumbing. In fact, there are several areas that can influence the plumbing quality in and around your home.

Continue reading to learn how to manage your outdoor plumbing and prepare it for the spring and summer.

Outdoor Plumbing Tips

When it comes to preparing your outdoor living spaces for the spring, the first step is an inspection. Take some time to walk around your home and check for issues regarding your outdoor plumbing. Once you complete this inspection, you have a better idea of what actions need to be taken next. Here’s where to start:

• Check all outdoor drains, gutters, window wells, and downspouts for blockages and damage.
• Check all hose bibs and faucets to ensure water flow is normal.
• Check all plumbing vent pipes (including the outside dryer vent) for blockages.
• Check the septic tank filter field for damage or clogs.

Blockages in these areas commonly include leaves, pine cones, twigs, trash, birds’ nests, and other miscellaneous debris. It is important to inspect for these obstructions as often as possible in order to prevent costly structural damage repairs. Once you finish your initial inspection, it is recommended to carry out the following tasks:

• Remove all blockages from drains, gutters, vents, downspouts and window wells.
• Repair any damages to the above areas.
• Apply a quality root-killing drain cleaner to your drain line.
• Have your septic tank pumped if necessary.
• Hire a licensed plumber to provide comprehensive inspection services.

It will probably require professional service to repair any damages to gutters, downspouts, vents, and drains, as well as, make any replacements. It is not safe to attempt these tasks without certified training, ample experience, and proper equipment. When it comes to the septic tank, it is important to have it pumped every 3 to 5 years. This will reduce the need for expensive filter field replacement.

In order to ensure your outdoor plumbing is leak-free and in good condition, you need to hire a licensed plumbing company for professional inspection and diagnostic services. They retain the proper tools, equipment, and training to accurately identify areas of concern, and recommend effective and affordable solutions for plumbing problems. Are Your Water Bills Too High?

Indianapolis Plumbers 317-784-1870

Indianapolis Plumbers 317-784-1870

As a homeowner, you should know how much your utilities cost you each month. This way, you can monitor your consumption and make changes as needed. When you begin to notice changes in monthly utility costs, it is important to investigate. Of course, if your bills are too low you probably won’t mind, but when they start to get too high, it is reason for concern.

One utility that is important to monitor is water consumption. This is because your water bills can be the first place you notice a potential plumbing problem in your home. When water bills sky rocket for no apparent reason, it could be a sign of many issues, but the most common is a water leak.

Locating and Repairing Water Leaks

Many plumbing fixtures and appliances can leak water. This includes pipes, toilets, sinks, water heaters, water softeners, slabs, and more. The first sign of a water leak is often times a high water bill. As soon as you receive a high water bill, it is important to call a master plumber to inspect your property. The sooner you locate and repair a plumbing leak, the less tedious and costly it will be for you. You must catch a water leak right away to reduce the overall damages it can cause. A leak that goes unnoticed can cost a homeowner thousands of dollars over a course of several years, so even the smallest change in monthly water bills may be cause for concern.

Here is how to check for a plumbing leak:

Turn off all water (including washing machines and dishwashers) and then locate your water meter.

On the water meter, look for a triangle or circle that is either red or yellow. This is the leak indicator. If it is spinning, there is a leak in your plumbing system and you must contact a licensed plumber immediately.

If it is not spinning, then there is no leak. If your bills are high, you still need to contact a plumber to investigate the problem.

For spinning leak indicators, you must immediately shut off the main water valve to the home or risk flooding. Close it slowly so you can better control built-up water pressure. Check a faucet to make sure the water is off.

Once closed, there should be no more movement happening on the water meter. If it is still moving, then your main water shut off valve is broken or not shut all the way.
