Top Faucet Shopping Criteria to Focus On

When choosing a new indoor faucet, you want to focus on function first, but also style and size (fit). Nowadays, you can also consider more technological options. Here are some key points that you can review to help you decide exactly what you are looking for in a new faucet:

Faucet Style and Finish

You can find all sorts of styles, shapes, and finishes on the market for faucets, from sleek silhouettes and period pieces to luxurious finishes, matching accessories, sturdy and basic designs, and everything in between. Decide what speaks most to your ultimate bathroom or kitchen renovation, and narrow your search down to that particular design.

Faucet Function and Fit

The most important element to choosing a new faucet is its compatibility with your existing plumbing setup. For instance, if you have a vessel sink, you would do better choosing a tall, single-handled model rather than a short, open flow model. Be sure you narrow your search down to faucets that fit your setup and will provide the type of function you are looking for, such as low-flows, waterfall effects, splash-guard, and more.

Faucet Technology

In today’s market, innovative technology is everywhere, and constantly evolving. With modern-day faucets, the technological advancements are very smart. You may want to consider hands-free or touchless faucets, or perhaps LED light-up faucets for nighttime use. If you have kids who like to leave the water running, you can opt for a faucet with motion-detection, automatic shut-off technology.

Today is World Plumbing Day

March 11th, 2021 is World Plumbing Day!

Indianapolis Plumbing Services
Indianapolis Plumbing Services 317-784-1870

In honor of World Plumbing Day, here are some fun and fundamental plumbing facts, including the meaning behind today’s occasion!

Let us all thank the World Plumbing Council (WPC) for establishing World Plumbing Day in 2010! For 11 years now, World Plumbing Day has been a staple event on calendars all across the globe among both political and social organizations! What does it all mean? What is the purpose of this special day?

Well, if you think about it, you will recognize that our plumbing innovations and technologies separate us from the stone age. Without sufficient plumbing and sewage management systems, we would be living like our ancient ancestors! Plumbing is an integral part of human history and continues to be one of the most vital elements of our overall quality of life.

Respect and Appreciate All That Plumbing Does For Us!

The World Plumbing Council (WPC) speaks for the entire international plumbing community, and did so when they urged for the inception of World Plumbing Day each year! They are an inspirational and hard-working organization with the motive to support and promote the relationships between quality plumbing and sanitation, health, environmental sustainability, and exponential economic success.

How Does Everyone Celebrate World Plumbing Day?

Right now, and all day long, there are planned celebrations, events, activities, seminars, and even friendly competitions that all honor and acknowledge the importance of safe, efficient, and quality plumbing. These occasions are used to share knowledge, build relationships, and make important connections in an effort to increase access to fresh water and safe sanitation. Whether you are a part of a plumbing fraternity or a regular citizen in your community, you too can appreciate the plumbing innovations and sanitation available to you and your loved ones by celebrating with everyone else, world-wide!

Fundamental Plumbing Facts in Honor of World Plumbing Day

The definition of plumbing is expressed as, “A series of pipes, fixtures, and appliances that manage the distribution of water and sewage in and out of a property.”

Indoor plumbing dates back to 2500 B.C. (And perhaps even before!) This includes the Egyptians, Persians, Romans, Greeks, Chinese, Indiana, and more.

Copper was used by Egyptians over 3000 years ago to lay plumbing pipes; and copper is STILL the most popular material used for plumbing pipes today.

Sir John Harington invented the flushable toilet in 1596 for his godmother, Queen Elizabeth I. This is why Americans casually call it “the John.”

In the typical American household, toilet flushing constitutes up to 38% of all water-use in the home. But a low flush toilet can save you up to 18,000 gallons of water per year!

It only takes 15 minutes for a drippy faucet to fill an 8 ounce glass. That means that a single dripping faucet can waste an average of 180 gallons of water each month and over 2,160 gallons a year!

Bright Green Spots on the Lawn

Do some areas of your lawn look like normal-colored grass, but other spots are distinctively greener or brighter? If so, you might be looking at the most common sign of a busted or blocked sewer line. If an underground sewage pipe is leaking or cracked open, it is essentially fertilizing your lawn, which as biology shows us, renders greener, lusher grass.

Stagnant Water on the Lawn

Some puddling every now and again after a storm is normal. But if your lawn doesn’t seem to drain its puddles fast enough, or at all, it could be a sign that your sewer line is cracked. A cracked main line, broken septic tank, and obstructions in a drain field can all cause water and sewage to release, which eventually pools into puddles on the surface of the lawn. This can also cause lingering odors, as you would imagine, which is another common indication of a problematic sewer system.

Sewer Odors

As just mentioned above, another common sign that suggests there is something going wrong within your sewer line system is a lingering sewer smell. If sewage water is leaking underground or pooling on the surface, you can guarantee it will carry its odors with it. Such odors can also attract unwanted nuisance wildlife and pests, which can be a threat to people, pets, and property.

Slow Draining

If your drains are draining slower than usual, you might want to focus your attention on your sewer lines. That is because slow drains are a common sign of a backed-up or clogged sewer line. If you have just one or two isolated drains that drains slowly, you likely have a standard clogged drain issue. But if all of your plumbing fixture drains are draining slow, such as the bathtub, kitchen sink, bathroom sinks, and showers, then it is likely your sewer lines.

What You Need to Remove PVC Pipe Glue

Whether you are a DIY plumber, or attempting some other sort of project that requires PVC piping, you will likely be faced with the imminent need to remove some pipe glue. This can pose a challenge since pipe glue is not really glue it all; instead, it is a solvent that melts two PVC pipes together, forming a lasting bond. Fortunately, this type of glue removal is usually only necessary when you need to separate two PVC pipes from one another.

Continue reading to learn what you need to remove PVC pipe glue, including some basic instructions on how to get through the process.

Indianapolis Plumbing Services
Indianapolis Plumbing Services 317-784-1870

Supplies Needed to Remove Glue From PVC Piping

To remove PVC pipe glue, you will need a few materials, including a quality heat gun, a PVC pipe cutter (or hacksaw), tongue and groove pliers, sanding paper, and a pair of thick gloves. You can find all of these materials at your local home improvement store or in the home-improvement section of your local department store.

What You Need:

⚒ Heat Gun (or Hacksaw)
⚒ PVC Pipe Cutters
⚒ Tongue-And-Groove Pliers
⚒ Sandpaper
⚒ Utility Gloves

How to Get Started

The easiest and most effective way to remove PVC pipe glue is to simply cut the pipe below the adhered surface. Simply pick a new point of the pipe, and use your PVC cutters to create a new cut. If reducing the length of your PVC pipe is not an option, you can look to your other materials on hand, starting with your heat gun. A heat gun in the construction world is basically like a super high-powered blow dryer. It is typically used to remove hardened materials on surfaces, such as paint, or in this case, solvent. Just be sure to leave enough room to install new coupling if that’s your intended plan.

If you haven’t already tried twisting the two PVC pipes in opposite directions to disconnect them from one another, you can try this now. Or use your heat gun on a low setting to heat the adhered joint of the PVC pipe. The heat will quickly soften the glue. After heating the glue, try twisting the pipes again. If they still don’t disconnect from one another, apply more heat and try again. Your tongue and groove pliers can help you twist the two pipes in opposite directions with higher torque than just your hands, so you might want to incorporate those into the process for better results.

After Pipes are Separated

After you have successfully separated your two PVC pipes, you will still have some solvent residue left over. To remove this residual glue, grab your sandpaper and get to work. A 220 grit sandpaper sheet is a good abrasive level to start with. If there’s a lot of glue left over on the pipe, you might want a coarser grit sandpaper.

General Plumbing Pipe Guidelines

Although the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development has a system of guidelines for replacing residential plumbing pipes, there are some factors you must consider before basing your final decision on their standards. You see, if your pipes are older than the listed guideline, it doesn’t always mean they have to be replaced. This guideline, plus additional factors, will help you make a better determination. Also, hiring a licensed Indianapolis master plumber for a plumbing inspection is ultimately the best way to confirm the condition of your home’s pipe works.

Depending on the material of your plumbing pipes, they can last anywhere from 20 to 100 years or more. Some materials are hypothesized to last indefinitely. Here is the general guide:

PVC Plumbing Pipes = Indefinitely

Copper Plumbing Pipes = 50+ Years

Galvanized Plumbing Pipes = 20 to 50 Years

Brass Plumbing Pipes = 40 to 70 Years

Warning About Polybutylene Plumbing Pipes

Polybutylene plumbing was widely used in the residential plumbing and construction industry in 1970’s and well into the ‘90’s. Polybutylene is a gray plastic material that was eventually discovered to be easily breakable. If your home is equipped with Polybutylene plumbing, you might be wise to consider a full replacement, as they are highly unreliable and prone to water leaks, floods, and flaking from the inside out.

The Best Way to Solve Your Hard Water Problems at Home

There are all types of misconceptions, home remedies, and theories surrounding the treatment of hard water. Although hard water cannot harm or kill you, it is undesirable when compared to the advantages of softened or conditioned water. Not only does softened water improve the look and feel of our skin, hair, and nails, it’s healthier for our teeth, reduces marks and spots on dishes, lessens pipe and plumbing erosion, and much more. When it comes to treating hard water, the best method to choose is to install a quality water softening system.

Continue reading to learn more about hard water removal, and why water softeners are the best choice for solving poor water quality issues.

Limescale , cloudy water, and spotty fixtures are just a few possible consequences of having hard water.

The Basics Behind Hard Water Removal

There are several signs that point toward a hard water presence.  Spots, streaks, and white residue on your dishes are some of the most common and primarily noticed signs of hard water in a home.  Other hints that suggest hard water include dry skin, dingy laundry, film and scale buildup, funny-tasting coffee or tea, increased utility bills, and more. Hard water is water that has excessive traces mineral salts, such as magnesium and calcium ions.

Such deposits and solids accumulate within the water by passing through soil, rock, and sand. Hard water ranges in hardness on a scale of one through ten. The degree of hardness is measured in grains per gallon. To get rid of these minerals, one must install a water softener, as mentioned before.  Always call a reputable and licensed plumber to install, clean, or repair your water softener.

What to Expect After Installing a Water Softening System

Although a water softener can be the solution you are looking for when it comes to hard water removal, keep in mind that it is likely to increase your water usage, resulting in slightly higher water bills. Also, your electric bill will slightly increase as well because the water softener operates on electricity. The important factor to remember is that these extra costs are small compared to the benefits a family enjoys from soft water. Keep in mind the advantages of owning a water softener and how it drastically improves the appearance of your skin, clothing, dishes, drinks, and more. More importantly, it reduces lime and scale buildup within your plumbing, reducing deterioration and expenses repair costs.

Do Not Make these Common Plumbing Mistakes as a New Homeowner

When a person buys a new house, especially for the first time, they are marveled by the accomplishment, and warmed by a sense of great pride. If you currently have these feelings of pride and achievement peaking at full force after buying a new house, it is common to feel very strongly about taking the best care of your new property to the best of your own ability. In fact, you might be planning to do most of the handyman and maintenance work yourself. But be warned, when it comes to plumbing, there are some all-too-common plumbing mistakes that new homeowners tend to make, all of which are very damaging and costly, both upfront and in the long run.

Continue reading to learn the top plumbing mistakes made by new homeowners so that you can avoiding falling victim to the same errors in your house.

New Homeowner Plumbing Errors to Avoid

Performing Plumbing Work Without a Permit

Any kind of major plumbing work must be performed by a state-licensed plumber or master plumber. There are several building codes, municipal codes, and code standards that must be met for legal purposes and safety purposes. If you are not permitted to do such plumbing work by the state, you should not do it at all.

Forgetting to Shut the Water Off Before a Trip

Many people have forgotten to turn their water off before a trip or vacation, only to come home to a massively flooded house or property. Do not make this same mistake. First, be sure you know where your main water shut off is located, which is primarily important for emergencies. Then, set reminders to turn your main water shut off valve to the off position prior to departing on a trip longer than a few days.

Treating Clogged Drains With Chemical Drain Cleaners

Store-bought chemical drain cleaners are never the right solution for a clogged drain. This is actually one of the most common plumbing mistakes homeowners make. Chemicals that go down the drain are not only damaging to your plumbing pipes, especially galvanized ones, they are hazardous to our surrounding environment. Instead, make homemade drain dissolving cleaner, or use a handy drain auger.

Combing Copper Piping With Galvanized Pipes

Galvanized piping is great, alone. Copper piping is also very great, alone. But together, corrosion will take place. Never make the mistake of connecting these two kinds of plumbing pipes together, under any circumstances. Otherwise, you can look forward to a costly and invasive plumbing overhaul in the near future. If such pipes must be connected, talk to your master plumber about a dielectric union.
