Temperature and Pressure Relief Valves<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

The pressure relief valve on your hot water heater is also known\nas a temperature and pressure relief valve, T&P valve, or TRP valve. They\nare designed to release excess pressure from within the tank in the case that\nthe water temperature gets too high. Basically, they prevent excess pressure\nbuildup inside a water heater tank, making them incredibly important safety components.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Temperature and pressure relief valves are usually\ninexpensive, costing between $15 and $20 depending on the type you choose. They\nare available at any local home improvement store, plumbing parts store, or\nonline. Just be sure you choose the proper T&P valve for your make and\nmodel water heater. Refer to the owners\u2019 manual to confirm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Replacing a T&P Valve<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

When you have a leak in your T&P valve, open and close\nit a few times to see if it will go away. If the leak does not stop within a\nday or two, you know it needs to be replaced. To replace a T&P valve, you\nwill need a pipe wrench, and plumbers\u2019 tape. If you have to replace the drain\npipe, you will also need pipe glue and new piping that is designed for hot\nwater, such as CPVC. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

How to Get Started:<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

\u2780 Turn off the power. Depending on if you have a gas or\nelectric water heater, you will need to either turn off the gas or flip the\nbreaker to cut the power. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2781 Shut off the main cold water valve that feeds into your\nwater heater.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2782 Turn on the valve at the bottom of the water heater, as well\nas, the T&P valve, to release any excess water and pressure. Allow them to\ndrain for about a minute.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2783 Now you are ready to remove the overflow pipe from the T&P\nvalve. However, if it is soldered or glued, it will need to be cut off. This is where you might decide to contact an Indianapolis plumber for help.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
