The overnight temperatures have steadily been above\nfreezing, leading several homeowners to begin their annual gardening and landscaping.\nIf you are one of these individuals, then you too have likely brought out all your\nneeded tools and supplies, such as gloves, shovels, trowels, pots, fertilizer,\nmulch, and of course watering jugs. Now, since it has been several months since\nyou have last turned on your outdoor faucet, also known as a hose bibb<\/em>, you may notice some perpetual\ndripping. This is common, and usually caused by freeze-thaw cycles, which can\nloosen the packing nut beneath the bibb. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Regardless of why your outdoor spigot is dripping, fixing it should be at the top of your springtime to-do list. Otherwise, you can face a long list of consequences, including additional plumbing damage, increase water bills, and more. Tightening the packing nut generally does the trick, but the dripping could be due to a faulty or defective washer, which would have to be replaced. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

What You Will Need: <\/h1>\n\n\n\n

\u2611 Pliers or an Adjustable Wrench
\u2611 A Replacement Rubber Washer<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Step \u2780: <\/h1>\n\n\n\n

Using your pliers or adjustable wrench, tighten the packing\nnut located underneath the faucet tap. Wait an hour to see if the dripping\nresides. If the bibb continues to drip, you will need to replace the rubber\nwasher. See how to begin in the next step.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Step \u2781:<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

Shut off your main water valve to the outdoor faucet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Step \u2782:<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

Turn the packing nut counterclockwise to loosen it from the\nbibb. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Step \u2783:<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

Remove the handle and stem from the faucet housing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Step \u2784:<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

Remove the screw from the stem, on the side that has the\nrubber washer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Step \u2785:<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

Replace the rubber washer on the stem with a new one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Step \u2786:<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

Reattach the screw (the one removed in Step 5) on the stem\nthat holds the rubber washer in place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Step \u2787:<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

Reinsert the stem into the faucet housing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Step \u2788:<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

Tighten the packing nut by turning it clockwise. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Step \u2789:<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

Turn your main water valve back on and inspect your bibb for\nleaks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
