What is Hard Water?

Hard water comes from the ground. It starts as rainwater, which is naturally soft; then it permeates the ground and seeps deep within sand, soil, and rock. As its saturating the ground, rainwater collects mineral deposits, such as magnesium and calcium, which cause water to be hard. Hard water is measured in grains per gallon. The more salt minerals water contains, the “harder” the water is said to be. Depending on local water treatment centers and plumbing developments, the degree of hardness in a person’s water will differ.

The Cost of Living With Hard Water

When you are dealing with a hard water problem in your house, you may face additional expenses that you will have to pay for out-of-pocket. Hard water can cause your appliances to break down because sediment will accumulate within their systems causing them to work in overdrive. This leads to premature appliance placement is very costly. Furthermore, because your appliances are working harder, your utility bills are going to skyrocket, which means you are paying more for energy and electricity and water each month.

Another way hard water will cost you money is in terms of water consumption. Your water bill will also skyrocket because you will have to use more water to rinse things, such as cleaning your clothes or washing your hands. Because hard water doesn’t lather well, you’ll take longer to rinse your shampoo and conditioner of your hair, therefore using more water. The same theory applies to washing your hands or washing your clothes in the laundry machine.

In a less obvious way, and perhaps less impactful, hard water can also cause you to spend more money on things like shampoo, conditioner, hand soap, dish soap, laundry detergent, and similar cleaning supplies since hard water makes it more difficult to get things clean. As a result of this, you tend to use more of these items each time.

How to Solve a Hard Water Problem

A quality water conditioning system, such as a conventional water softener, is the best solution for solving a hard water problem, whether at home or your place of business. A water softener eliminates all of the hard mineral ions in your water supply that makes water hard, such as iron, magnesium, calcium, and possibly heavy metals like lead and mercury. Talk to your local Indianapolis plumbing company for advice on which water softener is best for your home or office.

What is Hard Water?

Hard water contains hard mineral ions, like calcium, iron, and magnesium. Although these are essential minerals for us, we do not want them in excess in the water we use to cook, clean, and consume. Aside from hard minerals, there are several other types of contaminants that contribute to water hardness, and all combined, can alter the way water looks, tastes, feels, and performs.

Hard water is measured in grains per gallon (GPG), but it can also be read in parts per million (PPM) or milligrams per liter (mg/L) of calcium carbonate. The more grains, the harder the water, which means the degree of “hardness” varies on a spectrum. Water can be anywhere between marginally hard to very hard. It depends on where you live, how you obtain your water, regional soil conditions, crops, farming, and more.

Top Five Indications of Hard Water:

Limescale Buildup

The hard mineral ions found in hard water commonly leave behind a distinctive white film called limescale, which forms quickly and in abundance when water contains high mineral content. This white film is immediately evident around faucet spouts, shower heads, clean dishes, and even around plumbing pipes. The film develops and builds overtime, as hard water goes untreated.

Cloudy Water (and Dishes)

Is your water cloudy? Healthy water is clear. So, if you fill a glass with your tap water, and it looks cloudy or otherwise muddles, it is a tell-tale sign of hardness. Speaking of glasses, if your glass cups and plates are cloudy or have white spots all over them, it is another common sign of hard water. As mentioned, this is a layer of film known as limescale.

Greasy Water

Your water should feel crisp and clean. So, if your water feels slimy or greasy, or if your skin feels greasy after cleansing, you are probably dealing with a hard water issue in your home. When hard water buildup accumulations in your plumbing pipes, it causes water to feel slimy because it contains so many additional contaminants, like mold.

Appliance Failure

If you have water-based appliances, like refrigerators with ice makers, dishwashing machines, washing machines, water heaters, and water softeners, hard water can destroy them over time. So, if any of your water-using appliances breaks down or drops in performance sooner than they should, it could be due to hard water.  Hard water buildup can clog lines, corrode heating elements, and damage many other internal components within appliances.

Dingy Laundry

Hard water does not allow soap to later properly, nor does it allow water to rinse things well. As a result, a hard water problem tends to always boil over into the laundry room, and present itself in the form of dry, faded, dingy laundry. At times, it can make your laundry feel greasy, as it the soap residues were not properly, rinsed. Other times, it dries out and fades your laundry, making your textiles look old and worn before they should.

Hard Water Damage

Hard water contains high traces of mineral ions, such as magnesium, calcium, and iron. These hard minerals change the look, feel, or function of hair, skin, clothing, dishes, faucets, drains, bathtubs, water softeners, washing machines, coffee, soup, piping, and much more. The mineral ions leave behind a distinctive white film called scale that forms when water contains high mineral content. This white film is immediately evident around faucet spouts, shower heads, clean dishes, and even around plumbing pipes. The film develops and builds overtime, as hard water goes untreated.

Dishes will often have white spots or appear foggy after a trip through the dishwasher. And no matter how many times you re-wash them, they remain foggy and covered in a mysterious film. As for hair, it is easy to tell if your water supply has gone hard, or if it is hard already. After washing your hair, you may notice that it feels dingy and greasy even though you are sure you rinse all the shampoo and conditioner out. Hair will be heavy, dull, or frizzy, and just not itself in the presence of hard water. When you wash your hair in water that is not hard, you will see a major difference in texture, shine, and manageability. The same result applies to skin. Skin will feel dry or even sticky after a hard water bath.

Hard water tastes bad too, so drinking from the tap is generally avoided by those that have it. It affects the way food and other beverages taste too, like soup, stews, coffee, tea, lemonade, and more. Hard water also affects clothing after a cycle or two in the washing machine. Clothes will fade, shrink, and misshapen as a result of high mineral content. No amount of fabric softener can fix this!

Solutions

The best way to combat hard water is to install a water softener. Water softeners condition the incoming water supply to the home, eliminating hard mineral ions by replacing them with soft minerals like potassium chloride. Water softeners are expensive initial investments, but substantially increase a family’s quality of life in numerous ways. They pay for themselves twice over if you consider the amount of money saved on repairs to other household appliances that can be damaged by hard water. Plumbing pipes, water heaters, dishwashers, washing machines, and more are all at risk of severe damaged if exposed to hard water over an extended period of time.
